Recognizing National Small Business Week
As far as we’re concerned, every week should be small business week – but there actually is a National Small Business Week, each year and we think it’s well worth celebrating. Set as the first week in May, National Small Business Week includes events across the country acknowledging the momentous impact small businesses have on our country.
National Small Business Week is organized by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), and Administrator Linda McMahon, the head of the SBA, describes it like this…
“Every year since 1963, the President of the United States has issued a proclamation announcing National Small Business Week, which recognizes the critical contributions of America’s entrepreneurs and small business owners.
As part of National Small Business Week, the U.S. Small Business Administration takes the opportunity to highlight the impact of outstanding entrepreneurs, small business owners, and others from all 50 states and U.S. territories. Every day, they’re working to grow small businesses, create 21st century jobs, drive innovation, and increase America’s global competitiveness.”
The big impact of small business
- There are more than 30.7 million small businesses in America.
- Small businesses account for 99.9% of all U.S. businesses (according to the SBA, a small business has less than 500 employees)
- Small business create 1.5 million jobs each year
- More than half of Americans either own or work for a small business, and they create about two out of every three new jobs in the U.S. each year.
